Make the Most of SharePoint Data View Web Parts
Overview

During the past year, Laura Rogers has become the undisputed 'Queen of the Data View Web Parts'. She has been asked to speak at many events, including SPTechCon in San Francisco, SharePoint Evolutions Conference in London, The Best Practices Conference and multiple SharePoint Saturdays about her real world solutions for implementing Data View Web Parts in the SharePoint environment.

In this three part, EUSP Live Online series, Laura will walk through three of her most popular solutions, giving you the code, the web parts and the expertise to implement her solutions in your production environment.

  • March 5, 2010 - Build List Relationships through the Data View Web Part
  • March 19, 2010 - Dynamic Feedback Forms in SharePoint
  • March 26, 2010 - Build a Site Permissions Dashboard in SharePoint

Each workshop is fully hands-on, including your own SharePoint sandbox for implementing the solutions, all of the resources and materials needed to implement the solutions, and access to an on-demand recording of the entire session when you need to review. Please note that Data View Web Part solutions are created and maintained through SharePoint Designer.

Purchasing the entire series of three workshops saves you $58.00 and guarantees you a seat in each of the sessions. All workshops are delivered live, online through your computer where you will be able to see the presenters desktop as well as hear the session over your computer speakers or headphones.

Detailed descriptions of each of the workshops are shown below. We look forward to seeing you at the next set of EUSP Live Online Workshops.

Build List Relationships through the Data View Web Part
March 5, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

Have you noticed that in SharePoint, there is no obvious way to join two lists or libraries, using a common field? For those of you who have ever used Microsoft Access or any other database, you know that you can just create queries to display joined tables.  In this EUSP Live Online workshop, Laura Rogers shows real world examples of how you can show data from 2 different lists, as ONE.

Workshop Overview

SharePoint Designer is free for anyone who cares to download it. The problem is, what do you do with it once you have it. Many companies will not allow hacking of the Masterpages with SharePoint Designer, and for a good reason, but what you can do with it is create relationships between mutliple lists that are not possible out of the box in SharePoint.

Here's an example Laura talks about in one of her article:

"An example that I’ve used at work (in healthcare) is a list of all of the room numbers in the hospital, with the phone number for each room.  This is a static list.  There is also a list of patient appointments, and each patient has an associated room number.  NOW, I can display the list of patient appointments, and also include that room’s phone number along with the patient… data from two different lists!"

Laura Rogers  will walk you through her Data View Web Part solutions, showing you how to build complex information displays from multiple sources in your SharePoint environment. At the conclusion of this workshop, you'll have the tools and ability you need to add complex DVWP views in your SharePoint production environment.

This is the first workshop in a three part series 'Make the Most of Data View Web Parts'. You do not have to take the other workshop in order to take this one... they are all stand-alone solutions. Please note that Data View Web Part solutions are created and maintained through SharePoint Designer.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at Site Administrators and Power Users looking for techniques to add additional functionality to their SharePoint pages without having access to the SharePoint server. All solutions can be implemented with Site Manager level permissions in the SharePoint 2003 and 2007 environments.

Dynamic Feedback Forms in SharePoint
March 19, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

Getting feedback from your SharePoint End Users is critical when determining what type of information to display on your site, as well as what End Users are looking for when they come to your site. How are you currently getting information for your 'clients'?

Workshop Overview

Looking for feedback from your end users, or questions from them about your department or company? In this workshop, Laura Rogers, the "Queen" of the Data View Web Part, will teach you a no-code approach to this business solution.

Using SharePoint Designer and your very own WSS sandbox, you will learn how to create a data view web part that will be placed on the welcome page for your site, which will allow end users to type in and submit feedback immediately. Again, this approach uses absolutely no code, and requires no programming skills. This solution is applicable in WSS and/or MOSS environments.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at site administrators and power users who need to manage and display graphical information in their SharePoint site.

This is the second workshop in a three part series 'Make the Most of Data View Web Parts'. You do not have to take the other workshops in order to take this one... they are all stand-alone solutions.

Build a Site Permissions Dashboard in SharePoint
March 26, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

March 31, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

Please note new date: Build a Site permissions Dashboard in SharePoint has been moved to March 31, 2010, 1:00pm due to scheduling conflicts.Us

ually in SharePoint, when you look at your site’s lists and libraries, there is no way to quickly see which ones have their own separate permissions.  To get to those permissions pages entails drilling down to the library, to "Document Library Settings", and then "permissions for this document library".

Workshop Overview

In this workshop, "Build a Site Permissions Dashboard", Laura Rogers, aka @WonderLaura, will walk through the process of creating a permissions dashboard for your SharePoint site.  During the workshop, you will use SharePoint Designer to create your own permissions dashboard, with no code involved, and immediately implement it on your site.  Your dashboard will not only display an icon showing whether a list inherits permission or not, but it will also let you link directly to each list’s permissions page!

If you are a Site Administrator or Site Collection Adminsitrator in charge of managing security settings on sites, this workshop is for you. At the conclusion of the workshop, you will have a process for displaying all lists and library permissions from a site onto a single page, with access to each list or library permissions settings through a single click.
